I am a (very) long time Navicat user and version 12 of Navicat is about the worst piece of software I have seen in many, many years. Version 12 is a complete rewrite of their 'engine', Navicat was starting from version 9 becoming more stable and stable. Version 11 worked fine for me.Starting form version 12 it has become an unusable piece of crap. Reported many bugs to Navicat and so did others. Last year I have purchased a long-term maintenance license, soon after that version 12 was released.
If you are planning on buying, download a trial version first and try the functions you might use before you buy. Totally unacceptable alpha quality.Incidentally I have posted this in the MySQL Essentials page, reposted it here again to make sure potential buyers/subscribers read this. A while back I wrote a review for v9 that mentioned it was buggy, so I thought I should follow-up to say that I have found v10 to be rock solid. HUGE improvement in reliability in this release.Since I didn't mention it before I should point out one of Navicat's features that if you use it once will make the app worth the price: If you open a connection to two databases at the same time, you can migrate your tables (and views, procedures, etc) just by drag & dropping them from one db to the other.
No exporting & import. It's barely more difficult that moving a file across a network.
Amazing. The other parts of the app continue to be refined, making editing tables, and stored procedures just a.little. bit nicer. And I know it's been there for a while, but the SSH tunnelling feature is enormously handy when trying to access a database behind a firewall. Thanks Navicat devs! There are a number of decent and.free. database management programs out there but I found Navicat to be well worth the money. (You might think it seems like a lot but if you're spending even a few hours/week managing a DB I think Navicat is good value.)Unfortunately I'm stuck on version 8 because while the interface on 9 is much nicer, I find it crashes pretty much every time I use it.
Sometimes it's because of a timeout on the server, sometimes it's just seems random. There seem to be a few buggy interface elements that pop up from time to time as well (the enum default-value menu comes to mind - it often chooses the values of the previously selected enum field). So I'll stick with 8 for now. Hopefully 9.2 brings some stability. I've been using Navicat for a long time now, and it proven itself an indispensable tool for managing MySQL databases. And I have lots and lots of them.Navicat does absolutely everything I need. Transfers, queries, data/structure sync, SSH/HTTP tunneling. And support is beyond incredible! I files a crashing bug to them and got it fixed, AND the updated version of the program released in under 48hrs. I'm shocked! It is indeed an expensive tool, but considering how much time it'll save you in a long run, and hourly rate of almost any DBA/programmer who do DBs for living, the price is rather easily justifiable.Highly recommended.
